Life as A Sculptor

Never forget why you started, and your mission can be accomplished. Do you believe that studying and practising a particular subject or skill for ten years can bring you success and twenty years of persistence creates miracles?

If one persists in doing the same thing for ten years, he will eventually become highly skilled or even an expert. The adversities and experiences accumulated over the years will create an indestructible and valuable foundation.

Nevertheless, there are few people out there who are bold enough to turn their interests into careers, especially art lovers. Most of them usually end up in non-art related industries. Young people are also often discouraged by the elders that it is not realistic to rely on art to make a living as it is very much under-appreciated by the locals.

Therefore, it is very common for artists to be filled with loneliness and hope in their career journey. Some choose to quit halfway through while some choose to keep going until it is time for them to bloom.

In this issue, we are sharing an interview with a sculptor who has made himself a name in Sibu by making a breakthrough in his career. He is also a role model for young art lovers. His works are showcased outside the mall every season. It is a popular photo spot for people to check-in on social media. He specialises in decorating the mall with 3D sculptures using his unique carving techniques. If you are a Sibuan, you are definitely familiar with the special guest we interviewed for this issue – Wong Hai Hia , the exclusive designer and decorator of Star Mega Mall.

When he was young, he studied art at Sibu Hong Kong Fine Art. He has always had a deep interest in art. In 2002, he joined Daesim Group of Companies as a graphic designer. During then, his job was mainly about designing banners and posters for advertisement purposes and writing promotional price lists with marker pen.

Because of his eagerness to learn and push himself, he always looks for inspirations on the internet to discover new design ideas. By chance, he learnt about using life-like 3D sculptures as a unique selling point to make the mall stand out from the others. He then devoted himself to studying and researching on how to make 3D sculptures. After repeatedly practising and improving, he finally mastered the techniques for 3D sculptures.

He is grateful that his chief has been very supportive of him and has always allowed him to get creative freely. Every Lunar New Year, Gawai Dayak, Eid al-Fitr and Christmas, he decorates the mall with 3D sculptures accordingly.

After twenty years of pursuing excellence, he has become one of the best creative artists in the 3D sculpture industry. He has made countless sculptures for events like weddings, New Year banquets and other occasions.

Whether you can earn a living in the art industry depends on your ability to create your own personal style and dare to challenge yourself to innovate in order to be able to keep up with the times and break through your own glass ceiling.

So far, his largest work is 12 feet high, as high as one storey. Each of his sculptures is very precious and meaningful to him. All of them were created wholeheartedly by him. During the last movement control order, he made sculptures of frontline workers to honour their sacrifices and efforts.

When asked if anyone had ever learnt the techniques from him, he answered, “I have always been recruiting apprentices, but this is not something you can learn in a moment of time. Anyone who is interested in learning can come to me. I am willing to guide them, but whether they are competent or not depends on their talent and efforts. ”

As the saying goes, every profession produces its own best. As long as you are enthusiastic about your profession, you can achieve something big regardless of which field you are in.
